Mexico adopts new water efficiency law

The Mexican Water Commission (CONAGUA) has adopted the blue water footprint per unit of product to measure water use efficiency.

The new regulation establishes the methodology to calculate a water inventory which proves the efficiency gains resulting from the investments made by water users. It contributes to the national development plan 2013-2018 in its goal to implement a comprehensive development policy that links environmental costs and benefits towards a competitive, sustainable, resilient and low-carbon economy.

The main purpose of the new legislative piece is to establish a methodology to determine the volume of efficient water use, the coefficient of efficient water use, and the direct blue water footprint, resulting in fiscal benefits for the efficient users. The first step will be to apply it to specific river basins with an aim of rapidly expanding it across the country so that it can be applied to all Mexican users.
